Downloadable vs. Browser-Based Casinos


In the online casino world, there are two main types of games: downloadable and browser-based. Downloadable games come as part of an entire casino suite that players must use from their computer, while browser-based games are Flash- or Java-run programs that can be accessed from any computer with a speedy internet connection.

One of the biggest benefits of browser-based casinos is that they are available to users with all kinds of computers. Most downloadable online casino suites are specifically designed for PCs, and will not function properly on Mac or Linux operating systems. Browser-based casinos do not require players to have any specific computer requirements as long as their internet connection is fast enough to run a Flash program as cumbersome as an online casino game.

Some players are not satisfied with the selection of games in browser-based versions of online casino suites, however. In order to be able to host the games online, the casino operator needs to have a great deal of bandwidth. So, the solution that is often decided upon is to cut some games out of their browser-based offerings. This can create a problem if the player has very specific gaming tastes or is looking for a particular variation of a game. Downloadable casinos have full game suites so, depending on the casino’s collection, players are able to access literally hundreds of different games.

Downloadable casinos are also much more reliable, as they operate on the players own system, rather than on an internet server. Any number of things may go wrong on the operator’s end while playing a browser-based game, so players may lose their progress and possibly some winnings. With downloadable casinos, players can rest assured that their gaming experience is safe.
