Online blackjack is all about decisions, as players must decide when the opportune time to hit or stand is. There are also a wide range of secondary decisions that players must make in order to ensure that they are getting the most for their wager. In online casinos, players are given more time to think about their hands, so they should take full advantage of the options that are available.

Hitting and standing are the two most common decisions that a blackjack player must make. Hitting, which means taking another card after the first two have been dealt, is recommended only in certain circumstances. If the player has a 12 or better, they should only hit when the dealer is showing a 2 to 6, but if the dealer is showing a 7 to Ace, then the player should hit on a hand of 16.

If the player receives two cards with the same value, then they also face the decision of whether or not to split. Splitting gives the player two different hands with which to play. This doubles the chances of winning, but this option should be taken with caution. If the player is dealt two Aces or two 8s, they should split, regardless of the cards that the dealer is showing. On the other hand, 5s and 10s, should never be split.

Finally, the player can decide to purchase Insurance or surrender. Surrendering is an option for players who are expecting a loss. If they receive cards that they do not think will yield positive results, they can spend half of their initial bet in order to fold. Insurance can be used when the player suspects that the dealer will get a blackjack. By wagering half of their initial bet, the player can get insurance, and if the dealer does reveal a blackjack, they will receive a payout of 2:1!
