There is a serious mistake that many gamblers make repeatedly when placing their bets and could very well be causing players to lose big. Known as the gambler’s fallacy, the mistake occurs when a player is influenced by the results of previous trials.

Every bet must be made with a fresh perspective with no bearing on the previous bet. If playing blackjack, just because the dealer has gotten blackjack for the past nine rounds does not mean that he or she will get it a tenth time. The odds remain the same as they were for the first nine times. Unless, of course, the player is counting the cards because they will be able to keep track of what cards have already gone through. Counting cards is a very tricky thing to do and the majority of players are unable to do it correctly.

Finding irrelevant patterns in the way cards are dealt or a certain game is going can be detrimental to a player. For example, a roulette player who has noticed that black has come up the last few times in a row is more likely to bet on black. This type of thinking is dangerous because it has no bearing on what will happen the next time.

There is also a systematic fallacy known as the Martingale System in which a player doubles his bet every time he loses in the hopes of winning back all his money in one round. There is no way to predict an eventual win and the losses continue to double until eventually the player runs out of money.
