Statistics show that playing poker is predominantly a male pastime. Only 15% of professional poker players are female, but that number is a significant improvement on previous figures. However, things seem to be changing: a recent study has revealed that there are over 13 000 women in Europe, North America and Australia who play poker on a regular basis, statistics which suggest that one-third of all online poker players in 2011 will be female.

Previously, women who wanted to gamble were mostly confined to bingo halls and slot machines. However, things are quickly beginning to change. With online casino gambling came new opportunities; allowing women to play the game alongside their male counterparts without intimidation.

Due to the anonymity of the internet, online casinos have made it infinitely easier for players of any age or gender to hone their poker skills. Online poker rooms offer a low-pressure environment in which players can learn the rules of the game and expand their knowledge. While women were once intimidated by the male-dominated land-based poker rooms, online casinos have given women a way to perfect their skills without being dismissed because of their gender.

Most online poker rooms are still geared toward male players. However, some operators have noticed their increasing female population and, as a result, have opted for more neutral themes. So, don’t be surprised when you see fewer bikini-clad women on banners inviting you to “Play Now!”

As a result, more women are making their way into land-based tournaments. In 2007, over 1200 women competed in the World Series of Poker, setting a new record for the highest number of female participants to take part in a poker tournament.
