Many people may think that online gambling goes as far back as when the internet was born but the truth is, they really only started in 1994. But the journey that they industry has been on for the past 16 years is a long, successful one with plenty of interesting stories picked up along the way.
Antigua and Barbuda passed the Free Trade and Processing Act in 1994 making it legal for operators from around the world to establish legal online casinos. Microgaming was the first software developer to get on board but was soon followed by several others as many software companies were interested investing in the online gambling market.
It turns out that those people all have great business sense because the first two online casinos opened in 1995 and 1996 respectively and have since exploded onto the mainstream. There are now more online casinos than anyone can count as new ones are popping up all over the map.
Not long after online casinos took off, some people wondered about player safety and thus, watchdog companies were formed. These companies looked for several things, most of which pertained to player fairness and security. Today, many players still look at a casino’s credentials to ensure they have been properly inspected before signing up.
Online casinos have definitely come a long way in the past 16 years. Technology has improved to the point that many people even prefer online gambling over land-based casinos because the experience is just as real, with the added bonus of playing virtually anywhere with an internet connection.
