Not only does the internet offer a wide range of marketing opportunities for operators, it is also a highly efficient way of conveying the message that great fortune and financial success is possible for everyone. No one is excluded – except of course millions of Americans. Strict legislation making online gambling illegal in the US has been a great obstacle for American online gambling operators and users. With the Bush-administration in power the laws were tightened even further and even in the few progressive states where some forms of online gambling are allowed, the market is kept on a short leash.

Over the years The Federal Wire Act, which among other things prohibits betting operations within the US has been questioned and debated. The Wire Act states that electronic transmission of information for sports betting is illegal, but certain interpretations of the law argue that gambling on a game of chance is legal. However, when brought to court, different rulings from US Supreme Court and US Fifth Circuit Appeal Court have led to even more confusion and uncertainty among online gambling operators and players.

In October 2006 former president George W. Bush signed into law a new act that functioned as an addition to the Wire Act. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) prohibited bank and transactions from bank and related institutions to online gambling sites. The result was immediate reactions from the international community. The UK culture secretary said to the press that regulation worked far better that prohibition and she wanted to work towards creating a set of international laws to ensure the rights and safety of the users and still allow online gambling.

The idea that prohibition only creates illegal markets in poorly regulated countries, and therefore is far more harmful than legalization, has not materialized in the US yet. However, the international pressure on the US continues to grow and during his campaign newly elected president Barack Obama made it clear that his intention is to make significant changes in the US gambling laws. By doing so he would send a clear message of openness towards and cooperation with prominent international institutions such as the EU.

However, altering the laws enforced by the Bush administration might be difficult and whether or not Obama will take actions against UIGEA is hard to say. Yet, online gambling operators have new hopes for the US online casinos industry that seems to keep expanding.

As noted, there is no doubt about the fact that US president Barack Obama plays a crucial role in the future of online casino. Maybe a change in US gambling laws will make the American market similar to the progressive, yet regulated British market? All we can do is wait for the next move and see where history will take us.

Our government needs to recognize that if they legalized internet gambling here it would create jobs, a huge stream of income, and in turn taxes to the U.S. government. Not to mention the fact that it could be watched and regulated.

The concept is completely different than poker or traditional casino games. When you found out how things work, you will be surprised to say the least. In Costa Rica, one can get an internet gambling license for about $100 USD. There are no regulations, and no taxes. What this means? Any of these offshore gambling sites could be rigging their games, and no one has any recourse. Even the giants such as pokerstars could easily have software that plays poker with the real people. In fact, there was a recent article that absolute poker got caught cheating by using the resources of an inside man who could see all of the players hole cards.
